Australia is fundamentally a country made of and built off generations of hard working immigrants who came to this country in search of a better life. Unless you’re an Australian with an indigenous background, we’re all descendants of immigrants that came from a ship from the sea or air. 

This farcical notion that persons of the Anglo-Saxon European heritage is a better or superior kind of Australian and more entitled to be on this land and access its treasures over other Australians from other ethnicities is nonsensical. The other bizarre notion that the country is worse off because of immigrants and that multiculturalism is the source of all our socioeconomic problems is laughable. This kind of reductive thinking is what leads to ignorance and fear that breeds discriminatory sentiment. If you came to this country legally, and insofar you’re a resident or citizen with rights to seek employment and a home, then why shouldn’t you able to pursue the Australian dream and  seek these things out. Seeing some of these protestors scream “deport them” and “stop taking our jobs” at someone that “looks foreign” is just frankly racist rhetoric. 

As a case in point, I am a second generation Australian from non-AngloSaxon/non-European background. My grandparents immigrated to this country legally, got an education and found a job fair and square, worked hard to earn an honest living, raised a family and were law abiding and contributing citizens of this country. My parents and my siblings have similarly followed the same work ethic, integrity and commitment to be good functional members of society. My eyes and skin tone may look different to my AngloSaxon/European peers, but I am born and bred in Australia, and consider this land proudly my home and I am proud to be an Australian. 

Could one of these nationalists, or what may be insidiously white supremacists or neo-Nazis in disguise, tell me how my immigrant family and I from a non-AngloSaxon/non-European background would be considered a threat to other Australians or less Australian than any other Australian?

I don’t disagree that immigration policy needs to be reviewed to ensure that individuals coming to our country are properly vetted, and dare I say, it shouldn’t be open flood gates at the border without any checks and balances. But when these protesters descend into hateful racial supremacy arguments or resort to including neo-Nazis in their group to make their case, you lose all respect and good faith for a fair minded and rationale discussion.

We streamed footage of the protests. The reporting in the mainstream news tonight was vastly different to what we watched. No reporting of the majority of attendees-peaceful everyday Aussies out for a walk waving flags, singing and wanting to make the country as special as it once was. People are tired of being forgotten, broke, stressed and worried about keeping rooves over our heads and food on our table. Wanting a pause in the rate of immigration to let us catch up - build more housing, ease cost of living and reduce violent crime - does not make one a racist.

I have reservations about infinite immigration, most people do, but it's obvious the intent behind many attending is to just insult and belittle migrants. It looks like the counterprotests are smaller than the main act, but not by much, a few clashes are making the rounds already.

Went for a run during this and ran along a parallel road to the main action. Bumped into a few mini waves of people from both protest sides (the main protest was the march for Australia aka anti mass migration one but there were also anti-protests that effectively were Palestine protests, which I found confusing.

A few thoughts:  
\- the march for australia people seemed to be predominantly working class white people. I grew up in rural Canada and they seemed like them. Factory worker types, trades types, farmer types. Rougher around the edges types.  
\- lots of talk about them being neo-nazis wearing masks etc but admittedly didn't get that vibe at all from what I saw, though I wasn't in the main area. Just loads of people wearing Australian flags. Surprising number of families.  
\- came across the anti-protestors walking down the street as well and they seemed quite angry, which admittedly makes sense as they were the anti-protestors and they consider the protestors to be... nazis.  
\- I was surprised in that the anti-protestors seemed more unhinged. Saw written stuff like "die nazi scum", "burn this colony down", "death to the colony", "free free Palestine. Fuck Australia". My favorite tho was "capitalists are the real problem"

My overall takeaway was that the media vs on the ground was quite stark. As a sort of global city-person who grew up in a rural Canada, I feel sort of bad for the march for australia protestors. I suspect some of them are racist and there likely are some nazi people tagging along (just like on the other side there are some people tagging along saying "burn this colony down"), but overall my sense is this is a cry for help or towards a last gasp of a class of people that aren't going to do well in the future. The anti protestors are definitely the educated elite and places like Australia (and Canada) are ahead of the game as far as mass migration. In some time most countries will wish to be able to attract people to help bolster social safety nets with fertility declines etc etc.

My overall takeaway is that both sides are stuck on surface level stuff, which is a shame.

So this isn’t a live update coz I’ve only got back home but here’s a few takes from your man on the ground. I only went to watch the argy bargy btw and had other reasons to be in Melb. 

- got to the Melbs one about 15mins late. On the way there I’d been watching a bit of the live feed and the Nazis had be booed and got in a decent scuffle with Avi Yemenis security. I thought this was good but didn’t see it, and obviously this changed later on from what I’m reading. 

- the Palastine marches were going down Swanston street and the cops thought a Swanston/Flinders incident most likely. 

- ducked round to the actual protest and it was pretty big but tame. The occasional chant but seemed to have zero organisation. It was just a crowded, pretty sedate mob whilst I was there for 15 mins or so. 

- went and bought a donut and cleared back off mainly coz it was too crowded and boring and decided I wasn’t gonna see anything exciting so I’d head off to my next thing. 

- stopped and watched about 12 riot police getting kitted up in Flinders lane. Thought I might be leaving a bit early. Observations at the time - the helmets are remarkably broad-brimmed. One cop got fully kitted up and couldn’t get the rubber bullet gun strap over the helmet so had to take it off. This was pretty funny. 

- they scurried off to Flinders and Swanston in what was proven to be the wrong direction. 

- after they fucked off I wandered down Degraves Street to Collins and there was a heap of pro-Palestine protestors bolting down Collins. I joined in. 

- what had happed is the main protest had gone down Flinders into Elizabeth. So the main protest was heading North(ish) on Elizabeth and the counter protest South(ish) on Swanston, a full city block apart. The interaction between the two that I saw was entirely of the making of the Palestine supporters for what it’s worth. I don’t think the main protest as a whole went looking for them while I was there. 

- ended up dead set front row with the Palestine protesters but at the very side. Face to face with anyone from the main protest who stopped walking to scream back at them, of which there was many. Most of the main protest kept walking or were like me, filming. 

- Palestine mob started chucking stuff which I got a bit of as it flew overhead and I’m suss it wasn’t very nice. Btw, borderline zero cops at this stage, a few assaults but in general a whole heap of wanna be tough guys (and girls) on both sides that didn’t really have too much of a crack. I was filming from less than two metres at times. 

- first lot of coppers turned up. Lots of yelling. Sprayed a few of the main protestors. This emboldened the Palestine mob. They genuinely seemed happier with a row of cops there and started getting too close to the cops. The cops gave them a decent burst of a few cans of stuff and they backed off. I copped tiny bits coz of the wind, and also realised I’d now changed sides!!! 

- the horses came and some very serious looking cops and I realised I’d lucked on the protest version of the super-box and it wouldn’t get any better so I started wandering home, alongside the main protestors for a block until I got to Bourke street. 

- main protest was decent sized. They took ages to get down Elizabeth street. Palestine mob certainly wasn’t small but I didn’t get a look at it in its’ entirety. 

- the part I saw was entirely avoidable if the cops were better organised and the Palestine mob didn’t go looking for it. But it’s what I went to watch so thanks to both groups. 

- if we do wanna keep these more orderly, a permit system keeping them apart could work. I think the march the main protestors did was made up on the spot and it gave the two a chance to meet. 

- riot police should come dressed in riot gear. Gee it takes them a long time to get all their shit on. 

- and that’s about it. I skipped the next hour or two. Ultimately got way more action right under my nose than I expected to. 

Lastly, if you think protest-vouyerism is soft, I don’t care. Only cost $8 in parking and worth every cent.

Edit: btw Newcastle Jets beat Avondale FC 4-2. We know that crowd size, 2400, they announced it.

People are against immigration yet don't want to perform the back breaking work at minimum wage that needs to be done for a countries economy to function.

Jobs like farming, janitors, housekeeping, mining, garbage collecting, convience stores and many other industries all require low pay workers.

I would also add that Japan is facing a shortage of young workers in general yet want to oppose immigration, it's a bit strange of them to think that they can keep going as they are going now and expect things to get better.

They're tired of toxic immigration. It's the fault of the tourists who don't respect their customs in those countries, and with Muslims, Indians and immigrants who accept them out of need for labor but who do not adapt and cause problems for residents and citizens. If they need so much labor, they should accept immigrants from countries without that old-fashioned mentality.
